My Jewish friend, Marty, will often tell me “Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story”. There is a story of Abraham Lincoln overhearing that his Civil War General, U.S. Grant drank too much. Supposedly Lincoln responded by saying “find out what brand of whiskey Grant drinks and send a barrel of it to all my other Generals”. The truth is, Lincoln probably never said this. But it makes for a great story. There is a careful balance to be struck between enjoying the story and having a discerning ear for the truth. Nonetheless today enjoy the story, smile a little bit and if the storyteller gives you a little wink at the end just accept that it is still a good story.
