We desire the simple. We crave the easy. But all good things come with hard work. The old Jewish proverb implies to have good crops we are going to have to shovel out the manure in the manger that the oxen create. And we should be happy to have the manure to shovel. Otherwise, we will have no crops. I grew up as a farm boy. The hardest job I’ve ever done in my life is picking rocks out of a field. I’ve never known exhaustion like that. I hated it. But if I would have been mature enough to connect the food to it, I would have enjoyed the hard work picking rocks. I may have realized that picking rock was not only necessary but in a strange way, enjoyable. Enjoy your work. Because the alternative is misery.
